When is the HPAT exam in 2027?
The HPAT-Ireland 2027 exam is expected to take place in late February 2027. The exact date will be confirmed and published by ACER (the exam administrator). Registration typically opens in autumn. We recommend starting preparation at least 3–4 months before the exam.
How is the HPAT scored?
Your HPAT total score is reported on a scale of 100–300 and is a weighted combination of your three section scores. Based on published medicine-entry criteria, Section 1 (Logical Reasoning) and Section 2 (Interpersonal Understanding) each account for approximately 40% of the total score, while Section 3 (Non-verbal Reasoning) accounts for approximately 20%. Competitive total scores for Irish medical school entry are typically 170 or above, though the exact threshold varies each year depending on the applicant pool.
How many questions are on the exam?
The HPAT contains approximately 110 multiple-choice questions across three sections, to be completed in 2 hours 30 minutes. No calculators or dictionaries are permitted.
How does the HPAT combine with my Leaving Cert points?
Irish medical schools combine your HPAT score with your Leaving Certificate points (converted to CAO points) to produce a single ranking score. The exact weighting varies by institution but the HPAT typically contributes between one-third and one-half of your total entry score. A strong HPAT result can meaningfully offset Leaving Cert points that are slightly below the typical threshold, and vice versa.
